Helpful FACTS About Men UNDERWEAR
Underwear is one of the most private and personal
decisions in menswear because only very few people will
see it, yet it is worn every day, all day, right next to the
skin. As such, comfort is paramount in underwear and while
many men prefer one kind of underwear, it makes more
sense to choose the style based on the day’s activity.
When it comes to choosing underwear and materials, there
are a plethora of options on the market today, which makes
it difficult to find underwear that is perfect for you without
buying one of each kind. Therefore, we dug in and tested
many different underwear brands. In this guide, we will
present the best underwear styles for different activities,
colors, a #underwear-materials, quality hallmarks and
brands that work best in different situations, including our
favorite underwear.
It was a type of clothing that utilized front buttons or laces
which permitted men to urinate without having to take off
their trousers. King Henry VIII adorned his codpieces with
various decorations for show and padding for comfort. The
popularity of padding a codpiece declined in the 1500s.
As underwear continued to develop, men began wearing
tight knee-length flannel union suit that matched their
shirts. It wasn’t until the mid-1920s that a boxing company
called Everlast began to tweak their leather trunks worn by
prize fighters opting for something more comfortable with
an elastic band. From this invention came the beginning of
boxer shorts. Despite this level of ingenuity, men didn’t
appreciate the modern boxer and preferred the support (and
warmth, pre-central heating) offered by the union suit.
“ Whenever the economy tanks, men
stop buying new underwear first
because they aren’t public
garments. ”
Brief Breakthrough in 1934
Then, in 1934, a man by the name of Arthur Kneibler, a
senior executive at Coopers, Inc, a hosiery company,
received a telegram from a close friend in France. The
picture on the front of the postcard was a man wearing a
small bikini-style swim suit. This triggered the imagination
of Kneibler who immediately realized that this type of
apparel could be worn by men as underwear. He then
created what he would eventually name “ Jockey shorts”.
He chose the name because of the similar support that an
athletic cup offered.
By 1935, Marshall Fields department store in Chicago
began carrying the newly developed jockey shorts and
despite the horrendously inclement weather, they sold out
by the end of the first day. This also gave way to men
opting to re-try the boxer shorts developed some years
earlier and by the end of the 1940s, both boxer shorts and
briefs were the regular style worn by men instead of the
traditional union suits.
In fact, the jockey shorts were so popular that in 1971
Coopers changed their company name to Jockey.
Designer Underwear Makes Its
Mark
The 1970s underwear industry began to flourish and by the
beginning of the 1980s, fashion designers like Calvin
Klein turned underwear into a publicly displayed form of
fashion, and today it is probably the most counterfeited
underwear, even though the fakes can be really bad, like the
one below.
Men’s underwear began to adopt patterns and designs.
They became more flattering and a company named Joe
Boxer began to introduce funny and comedic underwear
with bold pictures and wording and accessories that could
be attached to the underwear via Velcro.
By 1985, Joe Boxer was a household name with their most
popular pairs of underwear being yellow smiley faces and
images of hundred dollar bills. This trend became even
more popular with the US Treasury Department decided that
the underwear violated forgery laws and seized over a
thousand pairs of the dollar bill underwear.
Rather than fighting it in court, Joe Boxer turned to the
media and made a joke of it which took the underwear
industry from playful to sexy and serious with solid color
briefs and dull patterns.
Underwear Today – An
Indicator of Economic Health
In the last few decades, advances in underwear have mostly
been limited to materials and a few gimmicks without any
real innovation. Interestingly, Alan Greenspan stated in
2008 that the men’s underwear industry was an important
indicator of US economic health because the purchase of
underwear was viewed as a discretionary. Whenever the
economy tanks, men stop buying new underwear first
because they aren’t public garments. While some critics
laughed off this theory, men’s underwear sales drop
significantly during an economic downturn.
UNDERWEAR TYPES &
STYLES
Underwear comes in many different styles and most men
usually settle on one style of underwear and keep wearing
that same style no matter the activity. Some enjoy the
comfort and security of briefs, others prefer the freedom of
boxers, and many opt for boxer briefs. Others prefer thongs
and g-strings. About 90% of all underwear sold today are
briefs and boxer briefs. However, because ever man needs
underwear, even the remaining 10% represents a huge
market.
That aside, rather than wearing the same style of
underwear all day every day, wouldn’t it make more sense
to wear a different style when traveling, working out at the
gym or when wearing trim denim or trousers? Absolutely!
Boxer Shorts – Well Suited for
Pleated Pants
Boxer shorts are loose and offer little support. They come
with an elastic waistband and a button fly and straight leg
openings with a short inseam.
Briefs
Briefs, or jockey shorts, are easily identified by their elastic
waistband, no leg and minimal coverage. They usually offer
a Y-shaped fly in the front and have enough fabric to offer
full coverage from the waist to the top of the thigh with
complete coverage of the buttocks. Briefs provide excellent
support and are less prone to bunching and rising than
other styles. They’re an excellent choice for men who opt
to wear tighter pants or low-rise pants. They are perfect for
men who work at a desk all day, because they end in the
natural crease between the body and leg. With the
development of lower rise pants such as jeans becoming
more popular with men, there are also mid-rise and low-
rise briefs which sit at the belly button or three inches
below the waist (respectively).
Boxer Briefs & Trunks
Boxer briefs are hardly a compromise as they represent are
the best of both types of underwear. They are cut like a
tapered boxer with the snug and supportive fit of the briefs.
Similar to a brief, boxer briefs maintain their comfortable fit
all day long. They are excellent for physical activity and
look especially good even if you are not in your best shape.
Underarmor introduced a compression trunk, which is good
for workouts at the gym, and therefore it makes sense to
switch underwear or to put on a compression trunk if you
know you will work out that day.
Thongs, Bikinis & G-Strings
There are men who enjoy the feel and look of a thong, bikini
or g-string, but it is not for everybody. Typically all of
these styles work best for men with exceptionally well-
sculpted bodies relish the look of it.
The bikini is a smaller style of the brief, also called a micro
brief. They expose the entire thigh, still managing to cover
the buttocks with a small front pouch.
The thong , similar to the bikini, offers a confined space in
the front connected by thin fabric strips, leaving the
buttocks exposed.
The g-string is a minimalist version of the thong that shows
as much skin as possible. Usually made of spandex or
nylon, they can be slightly more expensive than the other
styles due to the materials used.

Fashion Tips for BIG BOYS
You want to dress better , but most style advice
revolves around suiting up or just around
whatever’s trendy this season.
But that’s not what you’re looking for.
You just want to make a better first impression
on people you meet in everyday life. You just
want to look good in your clothes without
looking too flashy.
You just want to look like a better-dressed
version of you.
And that version of you still likes to keep it
casual.
So what you’re really looking for is
some casual style tips for guys who want to
look sharp outside of a suit and tie.
Well, you’ve come to the right place.
Let’s begin…
1. Aim for Maturity
Many men approach their casual style from the
wrong angle; they aim to look youthful.
But if you want to look well-dressed, you
should always aim to look mature.
Because maturity is an attractive quality in
men. Maturity, after all, is what separates the
men from the boys. Maturity shows
masculinity and commands respect, and it’s a
quality you want people to see in you.
That doesn’t mean you have to dress like your
dad. It doesn’t mean you have to dress old . It
just means you have to avoid portraying
yourself as a teenager … Unless you actually
are a teenager.
You want to avoid looking like someone who
hasn’t grown up yet — someone who’s stuck in
his past.
You want to stop looking like a boy, and dress
like a man.
2. Give Up the Graphic Tees
The first thing you should do to shed your
boyish look is giving up your graphic Tees.
I know you love them. I once did too. In fact, I
wore them non-stop.
But you want to stop wearing them. You have
so many better options.
Despite popular belief, they don’t make you
look funny, edgy or original. In fact, because
every other guy is sporting a graphic tee too,
you’ll just blend into the crowd.
Plus, people associate them with guys who
refuse to grow up. (Remember tip #1? You
don’t want that.)
Just look at the movies. You’ll never see a
tough, masculine action hero or a suave rom-
com heartthrob wearing a a graphic tee. The
only time you’ll see a graphic tee is when the
character is either a man-child, an actual
child, or a slacker.
You don’t want people to see you as a man-
child, do you? Then be a man , and stop
wearing graphic tees.
Instead, try wearing solid or striped tees. They
not only look sharper, they are easier to
combine. Alternative options are casual shirts
or polos.
3. Rock Jeans That Actually
Make You look Good
The go-to casual legwear for any guy is a pair
of jeans .
And nothing is wrong with that. Many guys
come to my site looking to move on from the
T-shirt and jeans look. But jeans can look
amazing, as long as you´re wearing the right
pair.
And FYI, the right pair does not look like any of
these.
Avoid baggy jeans. You want to avoid having to
pull up your jeans every two seconds. They
should keep themselves up without a belt.
Also, they should not pool around your ankles.
Also, avoid embellishments. That means: No
distressing, no ripping, and no bleaching.
And, this should go without saying, but I have
to say it anyway…
Avoid big logos on your ass. In fact no big
logos anywhere on your outfit, PERIOD.
Instead, keep your jeans simple. Go for a
straight, clean, dark-blue pair that fits like it
was made for you. Trust me; you’ll look
awesome.
They’ll not only look better, but they’re more
versatile. They look good dressed up and
dressed down. Can’t fail.
4. Change it Up Down Below
Jeans are great, but they all look kinda the
same, and they’re not your ONLY option for
legwear.
Add some variety to your wardrobe by
investing in a pair of chinos.
Adding one pair of chinos to your wardrobe
doubles the amount of outfits you can create .
Add one more, and you triple that number.
I suggest one basic pair in camel or grey. And
get one colored pair to change things up.
(Wearing color below the waist is something
few guys do, so it stands out.)
And you don’t have to go bold red. You can go
for a subdued color too, like army-green.
5. Class Up Your Footwear
Okay, you may want to sit down for this…
Your dirty, beat-up sneakers will ruin an
otherwise excellent outfit. You’ll want to
replace them with something more dignified.
And don’t think people don’t notice your shoes.
They notice. Especially women.
I can’t tell you how many compliments I get on
my shoes from women, and I’m hardly shilling
out hundreds of dollar for a single pair, as
some guys recommend.
Wear a pair of brown leather loafers instead of
your sneakers, and BOOM… You look sharper.
Brown leather loafers still look too formal for
you? How about a gateway shoe? Something to
ease your way from sneakers to classy leather
footwear?
Let me present to you, the desert boot:
Desert boots look nicer than sneakers, but
aren’t as dressy as loafers. They’re perfect for
casual wear, and they’re super comfortable.
They are an excellent choice.
6. Learn to Love Layering
Want to know an easy way to make a dull
outfit more interesting?
Add a layer.
Many guys feel a bit intimidated by layering
because they don’t really know how to match
clothes all that well. But you don’t have to
know all that much about it. It can be done
with very simple clothes too.
Imagine a guy wearing a plain grey sweater
and jeans. Nothing wrong with that. It’s a fine
casual outfit.
But still, it’s not that interesting.
Now imagine him wearing a simple white shirt
underneath his sweater. Boom. Instantly more
interesting.
It’s a simple fix, and hardly earth-shattering,
but it just gives that bit more detail to the outfit
that makes it more visually appealing.
7. Smarten Yourself Up
Okay, so you don’t have to suit up to dress
well, but that doesn’t mean you can’t smarten
your casual look up a bit.
Few guys are comfortable enough to leave their
casual comfort zone , but consider venturing
into the world of “smart-casual” with a good-
looking blazer.
It will give you an easy way to smarten even
your simplest outfits up a bit…
Plain white tee? Add a blazer, and suddenly
you look pretty damn sharp.
8. Decorate Your Wrists
Accessories are another good way to spruce up
a dull outfit.
And I suggest you get in the habit of wearing a
wrist-accessory first.
Why the wrist?
Because naked wrists are boring.
You can wear a watch, a leather bracelet, or
both. Doesn’t matter what you wear, but wear
something on there. It just gives your outfit a
bit more personality.
You’re saying, “I don’t have to wear this, but I
like wearing it.”
You go from someone who clothes himself to
stay warm to someone who clothes himself
with intention.
9. Ignore the Fashion World
When trying to figure out how to dress well,
men often look towards the fashion world for
help. They look to see what’s trendy.
But the fashion world is only good for guys
obsessed with fashion. If you’re just a regular
guy looking to become a better dresser,
knowing what’s trendy won’t help you .
In fact, you should do the opposite…
Focus on getting classic clothes that will look
good all year round. Focus on timeless pieces
that will still be stylish ten years from now.
Focus on looking classy and stylish before you
worry about looking trendy.
Trendy done wrong often turns out tacky, after
all.
So work on your style sense with timeless
wardrobe essentials that never go out of
fashion. Focus on mastering the basics of
men’s style, and you’ll be a better dresser
before you know it.
10. Stop Trying Too Hard
Many guys shoot themselves in the foot by
trying too hard to dress better.
It results in them looking like jackasses.
They hear they should wear accessories, and
they end up wearing a gazillion bracelets and
necklaces. Or they hear they should wear color
and they end up looking like a bag of skittles
with legs.
Of course, I only know that because I’ve been
one of those guys (and it wasn’t pretty).
You stand out, but not in the way you want.
Shoot for subtle, simple, understated outfits
and you’ll stand out in a good way instead.
Dress Well and Look like a
More Polished, Masculine
You.
You just got 10 casual style tips that should
help you dress better. Plenty more where that
came from, but these should be enough to get
you started.
So go on and start.
Doesn’t matter where.
Whether you start with replacing your graphic
tees, getting nicer shoes or decorating your
wrists. Just start somewhere.
And after you took that first step, take the next,
and the next, and the next.
And before you know it, you’ll look in the
mirror, and you’ll see a guy looking back who
looks just like you.
Updated fashion tips for men
Everyone loves top lists,
I thought I’d give you guys something you probably don’t see too
often, a quick list of some practical fashion tips.
Here are Quick Fashion tips for men:
1. Fit is King – The most dramatic improvement you can make in
your style is to make sure everything fits impeccably. Most guys
wear clothes that are too large. Make sure everything you wear
is almost hugging the shape of your body – without being tight.
Bad fit is an epidemic. We call it “Bad Fit Disease”…
2. Keep it simple – You want a wardrobe that looks great on you,
but don’t overdo it. Don’t wear more than three pieces of jewelry
or more than three colors. Don’t dress like a rock star unless
you’re in a band. If you want to be flashy, a simpler but stylish
look would be sporting a black striped dress shirt with a white
blazer, a dark pair of jeans, a dressy belt, and your sharpest
dress shoes. You could also add a flashy watch or a simple
accessory like an interesting necklace, but nothing more. Check
out out our article on basics to refresh yourself on what are
essential wardrobe items .
3. Change the way you see casual – casual doesn’t have to be
boring. Have fun with collared shirts , or take some inspiration
from those who approach casual a bit differently .
4. Pay attention to your supporting pieces – Some sweaters are
lean and others are big and chunky. The first rule of thumb is that
your top and bottom halves need to match. If you’re wearing a
big, chunky, rugged fisherman knit sweater, your bottom needs to
be rugged, too. Don’t wear a fisherman’s sweater with a
beautiful silk-and-wool suit pant. Instead, wear it with
something as casual as cargos or jeans, or dress it up with a
Harris tweed blazer.
5. Never go shopping alone – Most of the time, it’s tough to trust
the sales people because they usually work for commission.
Shop with a friend who will give you their honest opinion. Also,
read about shopping on a budget .
6. Stay a notch above – Don’t overdo it to a fault, but dare to
take some risks. It’s always better to be a little bit overdressed
than underdressed in any setting. All you have to do is think
about where and who you’re going to be with and just step it up
one notch. But make sure you’re not better dressed than
someone who is more important in a certain setting, like your
boss.
7. Never underestimate the power of details – The last thing on
is usually the first thing noticed. So mind the details instead of
throwing together the main parts of your outfit. “Details” can
include a scarf, a subtle pocket square, or the way you tie your
tie knot .
8. Invest in a superb pair of shoes – If it’s one thing that women
will notice, it’s your shoes. Especially how clean and sharp they
look. It’s easy to wash and press the rest of your clothes to keep
them looking new, but most guys disregard their shoes. Show
that you’re a man of taste by getting a great pair of shoes and
keeping them in pristine condition.
9. Fashion Tees with logos – When you’re going around with a
big logo on your shirt, you risk looking like a walking billboard.
Lose the lame Coca-Cola shirt and go for a classic v-neck tee or
something artsy (check out threadless.com ).
10. Disregard trends – Beware of buying something just because
it’s “in” right now – stick to what you truly like. A lot of people
rush to get in on the latest trend and end up with a bunch of
clothes they don’t wear. It’s better to learn to build a versatile
and timeless wardrobe first – then bring in your own twists with
some of the new fashion. This one tip will save you so much
money! Read up on our compiled list of 40 Common Men’s
Fashion Mistakes for extra info.
11. Don’t be a sucker for brand names – Don’t be a Patrick
Bateman . Before you decide to purchase an item, ask yourself if
you are buying it simply because of the brand name or because
you love the quality and style. Ask yourself, “Would I buy this if
there was no logo on it?” Check out our article on how to look
designer for less.
12. Continually cultivate your image – Invest more time and
money into your image. Cultivate your fashion sense. Your style
is a huge mode of communication, and is worth caring for as
much as your education, career, and relationships. Sign up for
our free crash course on knowing your own style. Oscar
Schoffler, longtime fashion editor of Esquire once said, “Never
underestimate the power of what you wear. After all, there’s just
a small bit of yourself sticking out at the collar and cuff. The rest
of the world sees what you drape on your frame.”
13. Ask for real feedback – Most of your friends and family aren’t
going to go out of their way to tell you what looks bad. You have
to ask for it. In fact, ask anyone and everyone you trust to tell
you the truth. Ask your hairstylist, ask your best friend, ask your
mother!
14. Upgrade your shave – Even if your fashion is golden, an
unkempt beard can be an attraction killer. Achieve a perfect
shave by trying a shave brush & old-fashioned double-edged
razor.
15. Experiment with style – The only way you’ll really learn, is if
you go out there and try new things. I make an effort to try
something completely out of my comfort zone whenever I’m at a

together .
Are you a young man desire to look sharp and smart? These tips are for you
Too many young men are starting their professional lives
without a clue as to how to dress.
This needs to change.
Young men are the future leaders of society, and dressing
sharp is the first step towards becoming a professional.
Let me be clear.
Clothing does not make the man……however.
The right clothing can give a young man precious seconds to
make his case and influence others.
A young lawyer, consultant, medical professional, or salesman
needs to understand this.
That being said – it’s important to note that it is worth paying
attention to your clothing as a young man even if you’re
working in a field without strict dress codes.
Tradesmen, welders, carpenters, and construction workers
must know that our clothing still matters as it introduces us
and tells our story before we open our mouth.
Crisp, clean, and well fitted clothing – wherever you are at in
the world – encourages others to take you more seriously.
Tip #1
for Sharp-Dressed Young Men: Dress Your Footwear Up
Starting from the ground up, appropriate-fitting footwear is the
first step to dressing sharp.
A traditional school of thought that’s still alive and well claims
you can judge a man by his shoes.
If you’ve never owned really good shoes before, brace yourself
and get ready to pay a significant amount of money for well-
made, classic footwear.
You may be shocked at the sticker price for well-crafted shoes,
but the quality and comfort pay dividends down the road.
A good pair of dress shoes will last you years and stay good-
looking with nothing more than some light cleaning and the
occasional shine.
Quality leather footwear isn’t a luxury for the excessively rich
— it’s a necessity for any man.
Tip #2
for Sharp-Dressed Young Men: Dress to Look Older
The way you dress is the way you are perceived.
If you’re still wearing clothes that scream “student days”
you’re going to be treated like a boy with no experience in the
real world.
Buck the trend, age your look a little, and get the respect you
deserve from older men.
That means raiding your wardrobe and getting rid of the
majority of your ultra-casual clothes: T-shirts, cargo pants,
jean shorts, sweatshirts and sweatpants, baseball hats, and
athletics.
Save a few for yardwork and exercise — but donate the rest of it
to charity and start replacing it with dressier clothes that speak
to your maturity.
Tip #3
for Sharp-Dressed Young Men: Ignore Fashion Trends.
Main-stream fashion trends change too fast to make useful
wardrobe staples.
Most young men don’t have the budget to buy new pants every
month or two — so stay away from pants that are only
presentable during an “in” season.
Distressed or bleached jeans are a great example; several
different designer labels briefly managed to sell the image on
the public, and then the fad changed and left a lot of people with
very expensive jeans too beat-up to wear in public.
Stick to classic clothing staples for the core of your wardobe
and avoid anything that’s too far out on the cutting edge —
even if you see something that makes it look good.
Tip #4
for Sharp-Dressed Young Men: Take Care of Your Clothing.
Generally speaking, being young means having less money to
throw around.
If you’ve shelled out for a few pieces of good, quality clothing
— a custom suit, a pair of expensive dress shoes, what have
you — it’s worth a few bucks more to keep the clothes in good
shape.
That means using good hangers for your suits, shoe trees for
your shoes, and a little tender loving care with the washing
machine.
Some of your clothes can come from thrift shops, if you’re
lucky enough to have a reasonably common body type and
some well-to-do neighborhoods nearby.
A few adjustments from a tailor can turn a five dollar thrift-
store suit into your dress wardrobe staple. Just take care of it
and protect your bigger investments with some proper
maintenance.
Tip #5
for Sharp-Dressed Young Men: Have at Least One Good
Suit in the Closet
No matter what your
job is, you’re going
to need a decent suit
at some point.
If you’re in a field
where you’re going
to wear one
regularly you should
look for a variety of
colors and styles; if
you just need a
single suit for
infrequent dress
occasions stick with
a classic single-
breasted, two-
button suit in
charcoal gray or navy blue.
If you’re buying off the rack take the time to have the suit
adjusted.
A few department stores still offer the service, but you’ll more
than likely need to find a tailor independently.
It’s worth the effort — sized suits are made to general
measurements, and not all of them are going to be a perfect fit
for you. A good tailor can make the small changes that take
your suit from looking mediocre to perfect for you.
Tip #6
for Sharp-Dressed Young Men: Build from White and Blue Shirts
White and light blue cotton dress shirts are the backbone to a
sharp wardrobe.
Much of this lies in the fact both of these colors make up
approximately 90% of the dress shirts sold worldwide and that
either color looks good on most complexions and body types.
Being so popular, these shirt fabrics are also available in a
wide range of style and sizes anywhere int he world, making
acquisition at a value price likely for the man on the lookout for
sales and discounts.
Patterns can liven up the basic white and blue color palette,
and there’s nothing wrong with branching out into some other
colors as your personal style evolves. Just have a good core of
white and blue dress shirts.
As long as you have one clean and hanging up in the closet,
you’ll never be completely out of decent-looking things to
wear.
Tip #7
for Sharp-Dressed Young Men:
Own Dark Fitted
Jeans & Know When
to Wear Them
Jean styles are
always changing:
rips, tears, acid and
bleach washing,
distressed, stone
washed, boot cut ,
wide leg, low rise,
skinny; baggy.
Keep it simple with
and stick to fitted
jeans in a dark color, sans fading or rips.
You can wear them with a fitted T-shirt for a relaxed, casual
look or dress them up with a buttoned shirt and a sport coat for
a business-casual style.
Tip #8
for Sharp-Dressed Men: Look beyond Denim
Well cut and classically styled trousers will make you look a
little sharper at social occasions than jeans.
They’re less common in a young crowd, so you’ll already be
standing out, and a good pair of slacks has a drape and crease
that looks much crisper than denim.
You can also get wool or cotton trousers much lighter than blue
jeans, which is a blessing in any kind of warm weather.
Tip #9
for Sharp-Dressed Young Men: Replace T-shirts with
Polos and Sport Shirts
Wearing T-shirts to the gym or when you are performing house
chores is fine.
But wearing T-shirts to social events or to work is a no-no,
especially when the shirt is too big and made from a shoddy
fabric advertising the company who gave it to you a decade
ago.
A good polo in a simple, dark color is always presentable and
always flattering if it’s fitted well.
You can also opt for buttoned short-sleeved shirts in the
summer, ranging from Carhartt work shirts to seersucker dress
shirts. If you do wear a T-shirt, make sure it’s new, clean,
close-fitted and in a solid, dark color.
